Western heritage is a big part of what makes the Yampa Valley unique. That’s why each October, we celebrate Western Heritage Month. Our working ranches and western hospitality are only the beginning of deep western roots that lace our lands. Here’s some ways we invite you to join us in celebrating western heritage in Steamboat Springs:

Learn the History of Northwest Colorado

When you’re visiting downtown Steamboat Springs, consider making a visit to a local museum, the library or bookstore, and even Colorado Mountain College part of your itinerary.

The Tread of Pioneers Museum is a great first stop for anyone who wants to learn more about the pioneers to our region who through many obstacles, played a huge part in developing the Yampa Valley into what it is today.

The Bud Werner Memorial Library and Off the Beaten Path Bookstore both also offer a wide range of books on the history of Routt County and Northwest Colorado. Explore some of their non-fictions on the Yampa Valley, and we’re sure you’ll walk away with historical facts you’re proud to know.

If you want to dive even deeper into our local history, check out what events our local Colorado Mountain College has going on. You never know when there might be an interesting opportunity to learn more about our corner of Colorado.

Discover Western Art

Steamboat Art Museum is one of our favorite places to observe art that represents the life and culture of the west – and it’s free! In October, the museum hosts the Plein Air exhibit, which features artwork from over 50 artists around the county who painted scenes from all around the Yampa Valley. Their work captures our beautiful landscapes and historical landmarks in varying and interesting ways.

Pine Moon Fine Art is also a great option!. This venue offers featured art from local artists that captivate our unique culture and landscapes.

Experience Western Culture

One of the best ways to learn about our region’s western heritage is to experience it. For a real western adventure, we recommend riding horses and learning how to work cattle at Saddleback Ranch, or trying a new activity at Steamboat Lake Outpost.

For a scenic drive, take Elk River Road north up to Clark, and stop for lunch at Tavern at the Glen. Here you can take in views of barns and wide-open spaces, and enjoy the rustic, western feel that has been preserved through generations.

Yampa Valley locals are proud of our western roots, and we want to do our part to preserve our history, traditions, and culture. Join us in doing so by respecting our ranchers and embodying the spirit of western hospitality with anyone you meet in Steamboat Springs and beyond.
