Did you know there are nearly as many cattle in Routt County as there are people? For hundreds of years, agriculture has been the lifeblood of the Yampa Valley, and without it, Steamboat Springs would not exist in the way we know and love it now.

History of Ag in Routt County

Steamboat Springs isn’t just a ski town — it all started with ranching. Steamboat’s origins trace back to settlers in the 1870s, when ranchers brought sheep and cattle to raise on the land. About 40 years later, cattle were shipped from the Steamboat Springs railroad depot more than anywhere else in the nation.

Livestock sales are still a crucial part of the agriculture industry in the Yampa Valley, along with fresh produce distribution. With fertile rolling hills thanks to the Yampa River and plenty of sunshine, it’s easy to see why agriculture thrives here.

Cultural significance of agriculture to the Yampa Valley

Because about 230 ranches operate in Routt County, there’s no separation between the ski town and its cowboy roots. Every facet of our community culture is vital — from the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series to farm-to-table restaurants, agriculture is the foundation for our identity.

To see the heritage for yourself, attend a rodeo under the Friday night lights, or even visit a local farm or ranch to see how these incredible operations are run.

In collaboration with the Community Ag Alliance, visitors and locals are welcome to tour local producers to experience up close what it takes to provide food for the region. Each tour demonstrates the diversity of operations in the Yampa Valley and allows people to connect with the land, animals, resources, and people that make up the agriculture industry. Check the Ag Alliance’s website for tour events, or reach out about private tours.

Becoming a Yampavore

During your visit, you can support local agriculture in so many ways. Stop by Yampa Valley Foods to purchase locally-raised meats, as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs, cheese, bread, honey, and other farm-grown goods.

Starting June 6th, be sure to set aside time on summer Saturday mornings for the Steamboat Springs Farmers Market, which features booths from across the region showcasing local products. This is a great way to support local and meet the people behind the products.

Plus, local restaurants like Laundry, CreeksideE3 ChophouseTable 79Aurum, and Yampa Valley Kitchen support agriculture by incorporating Yampa Valley-grown products in dishes. Events like Steamboat Restaurant Week and Ag Appreciation Week are also perfect opportunities to support agriculture and experience Steamboat’s vibrant culture for yourself.
