Dating back all the way to 1914 when early locals Charlotte Perry and Portia Mansfield created the Perry-Mansfield performing arts school and summer camp, Steamboat Springs has been known for its love of art. From classes and workshops to galleries and our free art museum, there are plenty of ways to explore unique western art in our mountain town.
Art Museum & Galleries
Observing art in downtown Steamboat Springs is a wonderful way to learn about the local landscapes and heritage that belong to the Yampa Valley. We recommend taking an hour or so to visit the free Steamboat Art Museum, and enjoying the scenes and sculptures created by both local artists and nationally recognized ones.
Other great art galleries and shops to explore include The Westerly, Wild Horse Gallery, and the Jace Romick Gallery. On the first Friday of each summer month, head downtown for the First Friday Artwalk and experience these galleries in an open, energetic setting.
Steamboat Creates
Featuring much more beyond their stunning Riverwalk Gallery in the train depot, Steamboat Creates is a local non-profit that offers art events, community classes, creativity camps, and more. One of their largest events of the year, Art in the Park, is held in July. With over 120 artists each year, it is one of the largest arts festivals in Northwest Colorado.
We encourage you to check out their events and classes during your visit as there’s no better way to immerse yourself in Steamboat Springs’ local arts scene.
Performing Arts
Steamboat’s performing arts range from small shows at local venues to the nationally recognized Strings Music Festival series that brings world rhythms and Grammy winners to our little region of the Rocky Mountains.
Whether it’s local shows, theatre, dance, opera, or Perry-Mansfield’s camp performances you’re after, you’ll find a wide variety of options to choose from. We recommend staying up to date on our events calendar here to know what’s coming. Experiencing live art in Steamboat Springs is nothing short of magical and we know it’ll connect you to our valley even more!
