In 2026, Colorado will mark a once-in-a-lifetime milestone: America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th birthday. Known as the America 250-Colorado 150 Celebration, or the Sesquisemiquincentennial, this statewide commemoration honors the people, places, stories, and cultures that have shaped both our state and our nation—past, present, and future. Colorado is known as the Centennial State, as it entered the Union in 1876. That makes Colorado the only state where you can celebrate both anniversaries of the United State and the State!  Steamboat Springs is proud to be part of this historic year, with special events and experiences woven throughout the community.

A Statewide Celebration with Deep Roots

The America 250 – Colorado 150 Celebration is led by History Colorado in partnership with the Colorado Tourism Office, working together to ensure that residents across the state can celebrate this important milestone. From educational programming and museum exhibits to signature events and artistic experiences, the celebration is designed to reflect Colorado’s diverse voices while encouraging both residents and visitors to connect with the stories that define us.

Here in Steamboat Springs, history lives on through our ranching heritage, ski culture, Western traditions, and strong sense of community—making this anniversary especially meaningful.

Stories in the Sky at Winter Carnival

One of the most anticipated moments of the celebration in Steamboat Springs will take place during Winter Carnival, when history quite literally takes flight over Howelsen Hill.

During the Winter Carnival Night Show, the America 250 – Colorado 150 Commission brings its spectacular Stories in the Sky series to Steamboat Springs, transforming the night into a canvas of light. As part of a massive statewide tour throughout 2026, this high-tech display celebrates our shared heritage in a way you’ve never seen before. The drone show will kick off the evening, followed by the traditional extravaganza, while spectacular fireworks will close out the celebration.

Look up as a fleet of drones executes a choreographed aerial narrative, painting vivid illustrations of our local community, Colorado’s rich past, and our nation’s journey. This is more than just a light show—it is an illuminated storytelling experience that blends cutting-edge technology with the timeless tales that define us.

Bring your family and friends to celebrate the milestones of America’s 250th anniversary and Colorado’s 150th birthday with a night of wonder under the stars.

A Year of History at Tread of Pioneers Museum

The celebration doesn’t end with Winter Carnival. Throughout 2026, the Tread of Pioneers Museum will host special exhibits, programs, and events highlighting Routt County’s role in Colorado’s history. From early settlement and ranching to skiing and community life, these programs offer meaningful ways to explore how the Yampa Valley fits into the broader American story. The historic stage wagon at the Visitor Center is a great place to start your look into the past. Its newly remodeled home perfectly showcases this glimpse into the history of transportation in Steamboat Springs.

Whether you’re a longtime local or a first-time visitor, the museum’s year-long programming provides opportunities to reflect, learn, and celebrate together.
