Just recently, my husband and I took our toddler on a leisurely bike ride downtown on the Yampa River Core Trail. We were amazed at the amount of activities going on with families by the river. During the summer months, the water is a popular place to cool down. The Yampa River hosts an assortment of recreation such as whitewater rafting (May/June), tubing (July), fishing (all season), kayaking (all season), and stand up paddle boarding. Many companies can guide you in these activities. For the younger kiddos, there are a few parks along the river with a couple wading areas to play in.

The following weekend, we spent a day hanging out at the Steamboat Ski Resort base area. We rode the gondola to the top of the mountain and hiked the mile-long nature trail – mostly flat with 360 degree views of the valley. After working up a sweat and an appetite we loaded back down the gondola and played in Burgess Creek at the base area. This is a great spot for kids and toddlers to cool off because the creek is shallower with wading areas. Parents can grab food and drink at the many dining establishments and relax along the creek in an Adirondack chair while the kids play. Don’t forget to hit up the Coca Cola Adventure Zone in Gondola Square for a boat-load of kids and family activities for all ages.
