Steamboat Springs is well known for its H20! Whether in the form of our world-famous powder falling on the Steamboat Ski Resort in February or following through downtown in the Yampa River in July, we’ve got it all! Maybe you’re looking to soak away the ache from a hike in some hot springs or challenge your kayaking skills on the river, Steamboat has a long list of reasons to pack your swimsuit and water shoes this summer.

Kick off the summer in Steamboat with a visit to Yampa River Fest, a showcase of the best paddlers around held annually in early June.  Spend time watching the kayakers take on the whitewater just behind Bud Werner Memorial Library while learning from local organizations, like Friends of the Yampa, about what it takes to keep the Yampa wild.

Once you’ve gotten your fill of the acrobatics and skill of these river enthusiasts, take a short walk along the Core Trail to learn about the namesake hot springs of Steamboat.  While these springs are more for looking, and smelling, just down the road is Old Town Hot Springs for all your soaking needs.  With their fully expanded pool system including more hot pools, lap pools, and a splash pad they are a perfect addition to any part of your visit. Those looking for a more rustic soaking experience can book a spot on the Sweet Pea Tours shuttle and let them ferry you along the dirt roads to scenic hot pools and natural beauty without having to lift a finger.

For the more adventurous traveler, take on some whitewater with Colorado River RunsThey offer guided trips on the Colorado and Eagle rivers for all skill levels. With over 50 years of experience on the upper Colorado River, their team will show you the best of what Colorado’s rivers have to offer.

After the fast-paced experience of whitewater rafting, or perhaps in lieu of, slow it down with Steamboat’s world-class fly fishing.  Swing by Straightline Sports to gear up or hop on one of their guided fishing expeditions.  Offering both float and walk-wading trips, their guides will be sure to share all the knowledge and experience necessary to help you with your next catch.

Round out a water-themed visit to Steamboat Springs with a stop at Steamboat Lake State Park, free to Colorado residents with registered license plates and just $10/day for everyone else.  With the marina offering paddleboard and pontoon boat rentals, along with the nearby public swim beach, Steamboat Lake has it all for those looking to get away.  There are easy to moderate hikes around the lake, like the short Tombstone Nature Trail, and sweeping views of Hahn’s Peak and the nearby Zirkle Wilderness, making this park, just 21 miles Northwest of Steamboat, a must visit.

Whether you’re hoping to keep it cool and calm or fast and wild, the waters of the Yampa Valley have it all.  Check out our Do Steamboat Springs Right page for more tips (sunscreen and reusable water bottles go with any swimsuit!) and guidance on enjoying everything wet and wild in Steamboat Springs.
