No matter if you crave an adrenaline rush or you're more on the tame side of adventurous, Steamboat in the summer has activities for all ages and types.

Take in a bird's eye view of the Yampa Valley with a helicopter tour! Zephyr Helicopter Company offers scenic tours of the Steamboat area year-round.

Boating & Rafting

All three Colorado state parks with lakes surrounding Steamboat offer camping, fishing and hiking; two have marinas where you can rent everything from kayaks to pontoons and water-ski boats.

The Elk River is a thrilling early season option for whitewater rafting. Later, the mighty Colorado runs all summer through canyons southwest of Steamboat.

Botanic Gardens

Go for a walk in the park while enjoying beautiful flowers, trees, and more. Park can be accessed via the Yampa River Core Trail or Pamela Lane.

Each garden is in a unique setting with its own slope, sun exposure, soil chemistry, trees and shrubs which determine what will grow. Every garden has a different focus allowing everyone to find something which will complement their home garden.


Head over to Steamboat's bowling alley, Snow Bowl, on the west end of town for a night of fun for the whole family.

Snow Bowl features Cosmic Karaoke bowling on the weekends as well as other specials and unique entertainment throughout the week.

Canoeing, Kayaking, & Paddleboard

Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach State Park are great locations to canoe and paddle board. Head to Pearl Lake State Park (22 miles north of Steamboat), if wakeless is more your style.

Dip your kayak paddle in spring whitewater or mellow mid-summer flow on the Yampa River. Try standup paddle boarding on flat water on one of Steamboat’s local lakes or up the ante and coast down the Yampa River rapids.

Get ready to lay out a full itinerary for the kids! Browse through everything from mini golf and The Land Up, to the only bumper cars on ice in Colorado at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Routt County has great beginner to intermediate rock climbing, where never-evers or those with indoor wall experience can enjoy the thrill and the view from several single-pitch or multi-pitch climbs near Steamboat. Rocky Mountain Ventures offers guided half-day and full-day trips to thrill-seekers ages 6 and up. Most climbs are “top-rope,” meaning climbers are belayed by a guide from bolted anchors.

Escape Rooms

Need a break from the heat? The Crooked Key in downtown Steamboat offers three, multi-room, immersive escape rooms to challenge any age.

Experience adventures like escaping an Old West jail cell or getting dispatched as a firefighter. The Crooked Key is fun for the whole family.

 Events Activities


The Yampa River is famous for fly fishing, and catch-and-release restrictions apply throughout town. There is free public access all along the river- but you need a fishing license ($9/ day or $26/ year for Colorado residents). Only artificial flies and lures are allowed, and all fish must be returned to the water.

Kids will like fishing at Casey’s Pond (US 40 and Walton Creek Road), where the water is still and the catches are plentiful.

Steamboat Springs has three 18-hole golf courses that challenge every club in your bag.

The Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club offers public play on its Robert Trent Jones II-designed course. The back nine follows Fish Creek Falls.

The 233-acre public Haymaker Golf Course preserves the open pastoral feel of the Yampa Valley by incorporating rolling hills, native grasses and wetlands.

Catamount Ranch & Club is an 18-hole private course at the edge of the valley floor.

Single-day horseback trail rides and multi-day pack trips are everyday business for local cowboys.

In the summer, one of Steamboat's most exciting attractions is The  Screamer. There's no doubt this exciting ride is fun for the entire family. 

The Nordic Screamer offers a magic carpet accessing two sizes of plastic sledding runs. Enjoy the spectacular views while you scream down the plastic outruns of the Nordic jumps in plastic sleds.

There are bulls, barrels, bucking broncos, roping and even a calf scramble for aspiring cowboys and cowgirls, starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights (June 13 - August 16), plus a special Fourth of July event.

During the summer, drive to secluded mountain lakes for a day fishing trip, or view the stunning gold aspen and cottonwood leaves in the fall. From paved roads to four-wheel drive adventures, your mountain getaway is just a short drive away.

Steamboat Springs is home to the 2011 USTA National Tennis Facility of the Year, the Steamboat Tennis Center with six outdoor hydrocourt clay courts, four outdoor hard courts, and 6 brand new RSS 500 cushioned-indoor hardcourts.

Old Town Hot Springs and Howelsen Hill also have outdoor courts.
