Top 4 Fall Color Drives in Colorado near Steamboat Springs

As summer temperatures dip into the cool of fall, the once lush green valley comes alive with Colorado fall colors and a vibrant palette of orange, red, and yellow. Patches of color slowly begin to dot the landscape until the stunning warmer hues can be seen sprawling as far as the eye can see. While there isn't a bad viewing spot for the incredible scenery, these are a few of our favorite places to take in the views this fall.

1. Buffalo Pass

A short drive from downtown Steamboat, Buffalo Pass makes for some prime fall colors viewing.

A few miles up the dirt road will take you through Aspen groves that are alive with color.  Keep going until you reach upper Spring Creek trailhead to go for a hike through the colors or keep going higher for more fall colors. For directions to Buffalo Pass, please click here.

2. Lynx Pass

This beautiful drive, located just south of Steamboat, offers incredible views of aspens that seemingly come to life with color.

After soaking up the views from Gore Pass, head north on County Road 16 towards Lynx Pass.  From here, you'll enjoy more fall colors before returning to Steamboat.  This makes for a great loop drive on a crisp fall day to enjoy fall in Routt County. For directions to Lynx Pass, please click here.

3. North Routt County

The Steamboat Lake and Hahn's Peak area is a popular fall drive for viewing fall colors in every direction.

On your way to Steamboat Lake, don't forget to drive up Seedhouse Road. Shortly after passing the Clark Store, take a right and follow this road along the scenic Elk River. This road offers views of the surrounding valley, the Zirkels, and great fishing opportunities for those wishing to take part in the great outdoors while while the views. 4. Rabbit Ears Pass

Perhaps one of the more iconic spots for viewing fall colors near Steamboat, Rabbit Ears Pass has an abundance of places to see the changing season.

Head east out of Steamboat on US 40 and you will enjoy climbing up the pass through vivid fall colors.  Continue east over the west summit where you will see groves of beautiful golden Aspen trees for miles.
