Steamboat Springs is known across the country and world as a great place for skiing and biking. The visitor business is a big gear in the local economic engine, however the city and county have developed a diverse, year-round economy based on a variety of strong industry sectors such as location neutral businesses and employees, outdoor recreation equipment, mining, energy production and exploration, construction and regional health care.
As the population in Routt County has grown in the past two decades, the economy has expanded as company employees are attracted to the great lifestyle.
“The economy in Routt County continues to diversify in a very healthy way,” noted Scott L. Ford, a longtime local economic analyst.
Bob Kuusinen, market president at Vectra Bank Colorado, agreed: “We do have a thriving, vibrant community. It’s definitely a community built to withstand the ups and downs of tourism better than others. It’s a positive thing that companies continue to want to move to the Yampa Valley.”
