You can feel the rush of air as the peloton sweeps by. The excitement of 10,000 cycling fans is palpable in the mountain air, as spectators cheer from balconies, rooftops and lean over barriers to catch a glimpse of international heroes flying by. Cowbells clang, pedals spin furiously and heart rates surge.
This is the USA Pro Challenge cycling race, and this is a Steamboat scene you don’t want to miss.
During this year’s USA Pro Challenge, the top cyclists in the world climb over Rabbit Ears Pass and descend into Steamboat Springs with a spectacular Stage 3 finish in historic downtown Steamboat Springs on August 21. The next morning mingle among the athletes as they prepare to start the Queen Stage at the Steamboat Ski Area promenade.
Three Best Spots to Watch
1. Downtown Steamboat Springs Standing between Sixth and Seventh Streets on Lincoln Avenue will frame the Stage 3 finish against the iconic backdrop of Mount Werner. From that vantage point, spectators will be able to see the stage winner celebrate against the stunning scenery and get a true feel for the excitement of the finish up-close.
Ample downtown restaurants await after the Loose Change concert which follows the awards presentation, and it will be perfect timing to watch the sun set over the Yampa River from a waterside eatery.
2. Steamboat Ski Area promenade Before the Stage 4 start, mingle with the pros and their crews at the base of Steamboat Ski Area and get autographs and photos of your favorite athletes.
3. 13th Street at Lincoln Avenue The riders will round the corner onto Twentymile Road right past the Bud Werner Memorial Library, over the Yampa River near the popular C-Hole standing wave and past historic bubbling hot springs on their way out of town to Beaver Creek.
