Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation ended the 2009/2010 winter ski season with a successful Springalicious. The sunny skies and warm weather complimented the celebration. The weekend started off Saturday morning with a Snowshoe Stampede and Snowshoe Round Up where people raced up the slopes on snowshoes trying to be the first to the finish line. Besides all the great prizes, all monetary proceeds benefitted local adaptive recreation. Next on the plate was the 30th Annual Cardboard Classic where homemade cardboard crafts raced down the face of Headwall to an uproarious finish. One lucky participant even won a 2010/2011 season pass just for entering the race! The afternoon continued with warm temperatures, smiling faces and perfect spring skiing.
Sunday morning greeted us to a breathtaking Colorado bluebird sky with high anticipation of another fun day on the mountain. The line-up started with the 3rd Annual Splashdown Pond Skim. Brave skiers and riders individually competed in this race as they attempted to cross an ice-cold pond at the base of the mountain. Judges amidst the giant crowd critiqued participants on style, air, crowd response and costume. These daring souls were not the only people skiing in costumes. Kids dressed in princess outfits to adults wearing an eclectic mix of super hero uniforms, cowboy hats, wigs, boas, and Hawaiian apparel. The final note to a perfect Springalicious weekend concluded with a FREE concert by Donavon Frankenreitter. The band played to a full house where people of all ages were singing and dancing around Gondola Square. I must say, it was a perfect weekend to wrap up another fun ski season in the ‘Boat. The memories of this great weekend should carry us until next ski season.
