In addition to the insane snow that fell in Steamboat this past weekend it was pretty cool to watch the going-ons of the World Cup Super Mogul events as well as the World Cup Nordic combined event. The best part by far, however, was watching one of Steamboat’s own, Johnny Spillane, climb onto the top of the World Cup podium for this first time in his 130 circuit starts.

I don’t often watch or follow the sport of Nordic combined but have taken more interest in it following the recent 2010 U.S. Winter Olympic Trials that took place right here in Steamboat December 23 and 24th. It was during these trials where Spillane secured his spot on the 2010 Winter Olympic team. It is a really unique experience to be part of community that has so many outstanding athletes right in our midst. Congrats to Johnny and the other 2010 Winter Olympic athletes. To learn more about our Olympic heritage plan to visit Howelsen Hill or visit the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club website.
