New families and employees in Routt County can find local human service organizations available to assist with wide ranging needs from autism to severe disabilities, from youth substance abuse to senior citizens as well as child care.

Child Care Resources

The Newborn Network provides resources for parents of children under age 3.

For youth resources, Steamboat Springs also is home to a Boys & Girls Club as well as a variety of youth clubs, camps and programs offered by such organizations as Yampatika and the City recreation department.

Education - Quality and Options

From preschool to community college, the Steamboat Springs area offers quality educational options to meet every family’s needs. The high-achieving schools are championed by energetic and effective teachers, involved parents and a supportive community.

“We definitely have strong community support for the schools, and the area is attractive for families. A quality education is a high priority for our community,” said Dr. Brad Meeks, superintendent, Steamboat Springs School District.

In academic year 2011/2012, the Steamboat Springs School District was one of only 19 out of 178 districts across the state to achieve the Colorado Department of Education's highest ranking of "accredited with distinction." That is a performance ranking the district also achieved the previous two school years.

Preschools

Elementary Schools

  • Kindergarten through fifth grade is offered at two public elementary schools in Steamboat Springs – Soda Creek and Strawberry Park. A Gifted-Talented program is available starting in third grade.
  • Emerald Mountain School offers a private, independent option for K-8 with a focus on strong academics, music through Strings in the Mountains, outdoor education, drama and parent participation.
  • In 2016 Mountain Village Montessori Charter School opened with first through fifth grades tuition free in addition to a pre-school program.

Middle Schools

  • Steamboat Springs Middle School, grades 6-8, earned a John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award from 2007 through 2012 given to Colorado schools that demonstrate excellent academic achievement. SSMS was named one of five Colorado Trailblazer Schools to Watch in 2011 by the Colorado Association of Middle Level Education.

High Schools

  • Steamboat Springs High School, grades 9-12, was included in the silver category among the top high schools in the United States in spring 2012 as ranked by U.S. News & World Report. SSHS offers Advanced Placement classes in nine subjects and concurrent enrollment courses with Colorado Mountain College. Of the graduating class of 2012, 86 percent of student enrolled in colleges or universities ranging from Dartmouth to Duke, from Cal Poly to Cornell.
  • The Steamboat Mountain School, established in 1957, is a private, college preparatory boarding school for grades 9-12 located in a rural setting outside of Steamboat Springs.
  • Yampa Valley High School is an alternative to traditional high school that provides a supportive learning community that respects all individuals and their overall well-being.
  • Of the graduating class of 2012, 86 percent of students enrolled in colleges or universities ranging from Dartmouth to Duke, from Cal Poly to Cornell.

Area Public Schools/Districts

Community College

Steamboat Springs is home to a residential campus of Colorado Mountain College. The residential and community college campus offers bachelor’s degrees, dual-enrollment high school/college classes, and a wide variety of associate degrees and popular continuing education courses.
