STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO - What a difference a day makes! One day after snow capped the peaks surrounding Steamboat Springs, blue skies and mild temperatures greeted the competitors of the 24th Annual Steamboat Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k today. Nearly 1,600 runners were warmly received at the finish line in front of the Routt County Courthouse in downtown Steamboat Springs by thousands of spectators signaling the welcoming of Summer 2005.
Jason Saitta, 27, of Parker, Colorado won an unprecedented fifth Steamboat Springs Marathon with a time of 2:41:02. Siatta, returned to the Steamboat Marathon with a vengeance after taking a year off from the event last year and not finishing in 2003, and took the title with nearly a ten-minute lead over Monument, Colorado's Mike Wasson, 39, who finished with a time of 2:50:28. Last year's winner, Steve Krebbs, 42, Lakewood, Colorado, stayed on the podium with a time of 2:50:42.
On the women's side, newcomer Amy Shelly, 26, from Delta, Colorado crossed the finish line just over three hours with a sizable lead and a time of 3:07:06. This was Shepard's first time running the Steamboat Marathon and only her second marathon ever. Coming in second was Sandy Schuster, 44, Denver, Colorado with at time of 3:23:49, and Shannon Kerth, 35, of Littleton, CO finished with a time of 3:28:39.
In the half marathon, Brad Pace, 49, of Ft. Collins, finally reached the top of the podium after placing 2nd in 2004 and 3rd in 2003, with a time of 1:18:20, beating his own time last year of 1:19:58. Scott Glenn, 35, of Boulder, Colorado, placed second with a time of 1:20:32 and Randy Rodman, 43, of Centennial, Colorado pulled ahead on the home stretch to finish with a time of 1:20:47.
Lafayette, Colorado's Kelly Carlson, 40, claimed her second Half Marathon title with a time of 1:27:53, while second and third place finishers Kim Jones, 47, of Ft. Collins and Amanda Ewing, 24, of Colorado Springs came down to the wire with times of 1:33:02 and 1:33:33 respectively.
Competitors began the race in Hahns Peak, Colorado in the midst of fog. Temperatures rose into the 80s as racers finished in downtown Steamboat Springs under sunny skies.
The Steamboat Marathon course began at historic Hahn's Peak Village, which is 8,128 feet and located on the edge of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness Area north of Steamboat Springs. The course winds down Colorado Highway 129 past ranches, open meadows, various mountain peaks, and the Elk River into downtown Steamboat Springs, elevation 6,728. The half marathon began at Moon Hill, near Clark, Colorado.
