(STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO.) This isn’t your typical rodeo. Forget your spurs, don’t mount that bucking bull and leave your horses at home. The 28th Annual Bank of the West Hot Air Balloon Rodeo is for soaring not for saddle bronc riding, (with the exception of this year’s Western dress theme).  The colorful contest this weekend, Saturday, July 12th and Sunday, July 13th, will showcase first-hand the beauty of our unique Rocky Mountain landscape with magnificent hot air balloons as the main attraction.

Stretching across the deep blue northern Colorado sky, 40 hot air balloons will take flight in the early morning hours, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that will ignite the senses, delight your imagination and make us all feel like children again. Launching from Bald Eagle Lake, hot air balloons take on the Steamboat Springs sky with their majestic presence and vibrant hues helping to create a breathtaking display with Steamboat’s Yampa Valley as the backdrop.

Celebrating its 28th year, the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo is a jewel of our community, in which we take enormous pride. The 40 balloons are all sponsored by local businesses that see the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo as a vital piece of Steamboat tradition. This summertime signature event is a playful way to see Steamboat Springs in the summer months.

We invite you to walk, ride your bike or take advantage of the improved FREE transportation from the Meadows parking lot (Pine Grove Road and Mt. Werner Road) to the launch sight where there is fee admission. Buses will run consistently from the launch field to the Meadows lot throughout the morning starting at 6 a.m. and running until the event is over. The launch field hosts souvenir and food vendors. No dogs and no smoking permitted on the launch field.

“Out of all weekends here in Steamboat Springs the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo weekend is the most colorful and one of the most energetic,” says Kara Givnish, Special Events Director at the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association. “The Hot Air Balloon Rodeo celebrates life in Steamboat Springs; it is extremely vibrant and full of family fun. The event entertains generations alike, making it the perfect weekend getaway with the family.”

Simultaneously, the 34th Annual Art in the Park will be hosting colorful displays of handcrafted arts that line the edges of West Lincoln Park. Musicians, dancers and artisans will entertain the crowds. More than 140 artists offer hand-crafted items made from wood, metal, clay, leather, fiber and glass, plus fine art, jewelry, sculpture, photography and more. Art in the Park maintains its unique status by limiting eligibility to artists and craftspeople who display work entirely of their own original concept, design and execution. We look forward to seeing you at Steamboat’s Most Colorful Weekend.
