About UsThe Mission of the Steamboat Art Museum (SAM) is to collect and preserve fine art, and to present it to the public, with a primary focus on the culture and heritage of Northwestern Colorado. Established in 2006 as the only art museum in the NW Colorado region, SAM is filling a niche by exhibiting original artwork by living master artists whose work is relevant to the culture and heritage of the West.
Housed in the historic Rehder Building in downtown Steamboat Springs, SAM is becoming a cultural cornerstone by presenting exhibits that would otherwise only be seen in a metropolitan museum and offering educational and outreach programs for our community. Currently a major renovation of the 1920 addition to the original 1905 building is underway, which will double our exhibit space, add and art resource library and a workshop room. The main Macnab gallery is open during the renovation, scheduled for completion in the fall of 2017.
To date, SAM has presented thirty exhibitions, including an international exchange with Mexico, the $10 million Bill Gollings exhibit on loan from the University of Wyoming, an eye-opening and timely local collection of Russian Art from the 1930s-80s, as well as numerous exhibits featuring individual notable master artists from our region. These artists include Scott Christiansen, Jim Norton, Clyde Aspevig, Quang Ho, Donna Howell-Sickles, Mark Thompson, Jean Perry, Curtis Zabel, Rod Hanna, John Fawcett, to name a few. Traveling or group exhibits have included the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, the American Watercolor Society, Plein Air Painters of America, Exquisite Miniatures, and Birds in Art.
Our education, outreach and workshop programs are as vital as ever, reaching art lovers of all ages. SAM also has a unique Museum Store that is a successful venue for over 40 regional and local artists, authors, crafters and jewelers, and sells supporting merchandise for SAMs exhibits as well as quality art supplies to the public.
